The night was also a major one for the "Vogue" singer, who entered the ceremony with a career-high number of nominations and ultimately took home seven awards. She won Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for "Bring Your Love," as well as awards for Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video, and Best Album for Confessions II.
Madonna also made a statement with her outfit when she returned to the stage to accept her awards. She changed out of her black silk robe and burgundy lingerie bodysuit from her performance and slipped into a black corset bodysuit, black fishnet tights, and pointed-toe pumps, accessorizing with a reported $2.8 million worth of Leviev diamonds. She later added a black leather jacket with silver accents to complete the look.
"I spent the last year and a half finding myself, and really making the music that I wanted to make," she said during her Artist of the Year acceptance speech. "And to me that really is the definition of being an artist, and my hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year or the next ten years of your life...doing the same."

The outfit sparked plenty of criticism online, with some social media users arguing that the revealing look was inappropriate for Madonna at 68 years old and telling her to "wear more clothes" or "dress her age." Similar age-focused backlash has followed the singer several times this year, including after her surprise Coachella appearance in a corset and matching bottoms, when critics questioned why she was still wearing such revealing stage outfits.
"I've loved Madonna since the beginning, but woman, put some clothes on," commented an Instagram user.

However, there were also numerous fans of the diva who backed her up, writing that she looked great and that, due to her status, she should be able to wear what she wants.
