Sydney Sweeney has faced a lot of backlash for her provocative ad for Novig, a sports betting company the actress has a stake in. The ad features Sweeney nearly completely nude, with just various pieces of sports equipment strategically covering her modesty. Sharon Stone, the actress most known for her provocative scene in Basic Instinct, has come out of the woodwork to say her piece, calling on Sweeney to “take responsibility.” However, many social media users found this quite hypocritical of Stone to say, given her history of seductive movie scenes. Sharon Stone Slams Sydney Sweeney For Sports Betting Ad
In early September, Novig's ad featuring Sweeney dropped, and the backlash was quick and in large quantities. Women around the world spoke out against the ad, arguing that it sexualizes women in a context where female athletes have spent years trying to be taken seriously for their athletic accomplishments.
Many celebrities have spoken out against the ad and against Sweeney in particular, with Sharon Stone being one of the notable figures. "I think that it’s up to her to take responsibility for her actions, not up to me to judge her for her actions," Stone said to People during Variety's Power of Women event on September 23rd. "It is up to me to be a cheerleader for the women who have made it through and become champions in women’s sports."
"We can’t denigrate women’s sports to get men’s attention so they can gamble," she added.

Social Media Reactions
Across social media platforms, users couldn't help point out the hypocrisy of Stone's reaction, especially given her track record of films. "The ad was nothing about women’s sports," one person pointed out on Instagram. "It was using sex to get men’s attention, sort of like every movie Sharon Stone was in."
"Remind me of the single scene which gave Stone her stardom?" another person asked, referring to Stone's Basic Instinct interrogation scene.
"This from someone who spread eagle on camera that made one of the most iconic movie scenes ever," said another. "C'mon."
"Be quiet Sharon, you’re the last person that should be weighing in on this," agreed the next.
"A big hypocritical of her if you ask me," said another user.
"That's rich coming from you!" a final fan wrote.
