Blush can instantly brighten your complexion, add warmth, and bring a healthy-looking flush to your skin, but where you place it can make just as much of a difference as the shade you choose. As our faces naturally changes with age, the blush techniques that worked beautifully in our 20s or 30s can start to work against us. Certain placement habits can pull facial features downward, emphasize skin texture, or make your makeup look heavier than you intended.

There are no strict rules about where blush “belongs,” but if your goal is a fresh, lifted, radiant effect, a few small adjustments can make a big difference. From applying color too low on the cheeks to concentrating it in areas that don’t flatter your natural bone structure, here are four common blush placement mistakes, and how to correct them.

1. Applying Blush Too Low on Cheeks

Placing blush too far down on the cheeks can visually pull the face downward rather than creating the lifted effect many people are after. Instead, try applying blush slightly higher, concentrating the color along the upper cheekbones and blending it gently upward and outward toward the temples. Keeping the deepest concentration of color higher on the face can help emphasize your cheekbones and create a fresh, lifted look.

2. Following Advice for a Different Face Shape

There's no single “perfect” blush placement because everyone's facial structure is different. A technique designed to elongate a round face, for example, may not create the same effect on a longer or heart-shaped face. Instead of automatically copying the latest blush-placement trend, use your own cheekbones and proportions as your guide.

3. Only Applying Blush to the Apples of Cheeks

Smiling and swirling blush directly onto the apples of the cheeks is classic advice, but it doesn't work equally well for everyone. When your face relaxes after smiling, the apples naturally drop slightly, which means your blush can end up sitting lower than you intended. Rather than concentrating all of the color in one round area, try placing blush slightly above the apples and sweeping it outward and upward along the cheekbones. You'll still get that healthy flush, but the elongated placement can give the face a more lifted, modern appearance.

4. Placing Blush Too Close to the Nose

Bringing blush too close to the sides of the nose can concentrate color in the center of the face, which may make your features appear more crowded and can sometimes emphasize redness around the nose. For a more open, lifted effect, start your blush a little farther out on the cheeks and blend toward the hairline. Leaving some space between your nose and the beginning of your blush can help define the cheekbones.
