The awarding of a Congressional Medal of Honor is supposed to be a rather serious occasion, a show of respect for servicemen and women who distinguish themselves as true heroes. However, Donald Trump doesn’t seem to understand the gravity of the ceremony, and earlier this week actually made jokes while awarding Major Nicholas Dockery with his medal, a move that many Americans are calling “embarrassing.” Keep reading for more information.

Donald Trump Cracks Jokes During Medal Of Honor Ceremony

Before presenting the award to Nicholas Dockery for his bravery and sacrifice in the name of America, Trump made a joke to the audience: "Only a few have received our highest military distinction, the Congressional Medal of Honor" he said. "I wanted to give it to myself, but I was informed I couldn't do that. And I couldn't find anything I was worthy of. So here we are"

To make matters worse, when he went to place the medal around Dockery's neck, it seems he couldn't figure out how to snap the clasp into the place, and instead simply tied it in a knot around Dockery's neck. The medal, instead of hanging over Dockery's chest, was tied tightly around his neck. After Trump finally finished with the ribbon, he turned to the audience and joked, "Now that's not coming off now."

Social Media Reactions

Very few Americans thought the occasion was a laughing matter, and called out Trump on social media for "ruining" the ceremony and not taking it seriously. "How unprofessional," one person wrote on Instagram. "He ruined this distinguished moment for Major Dockery."

"How humiliating for us as a nation," another person wrote.

"You know who else has trouble with fine motor skills?" the next person asked. "Dementia patients."

"Time for another cognitive test," suggested a fourth user.

"Everything has to be a disaster with him," another comment reads.

"Imagine getting awarded the highest honor possible in the military only to have it completely overshadowed by something as embarrassing as this..." a final user wrote.
