Barack Obama has been sharing a lot about his and Michelle’s new Obama Presidential Center, and one aspect of it recently brought him to tears.
The former president sat down for an interview with MS NOW, where, after months of building up hype and anticipation surrounding his legacy center, he revealed his favorite exhibit in the entire on-campus museum dedicated to his presidency. While reflecting on the meaning behind it, he became teary-eyed and “choked up,” creating a vulnerable moment the public doesn’t see often. Read more about his favorite exhibit and how the internet reacted to his interview below.
Barack Obama Tears Up While Explaining His Favorite Exhibit At The Obama Presidential Center
One of the most talked-about events over the last week was the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, the museum, library, community center, and athletic space that stretches out through Chicago’s South Side neighborhood.
After months and months of anticipation, the center finally opened with a star-packed ceremony on June 18th and had its doors open to the public the following day, coinciding with the Juneteenth holiday. The center contains a lot of information and resources for visitors and Chicago residents to enjoy. Still, one of the most notable parts is the museum dedicated to the 44th president, his family, his time in office, etc.
In a new interview with MS NOW, Barack revealed his “favorite” exhibit in the entire museum, which displayed some of the ten daily letters his correspondence team would send him from people across the country every day. The ten letters were often selected out of 40,000 sent to the White House daily, and often gave the president a real glimpse into what life was like for different kinds of people in America. In the interview, he became visibly “choked up” while describing the letters.
“It’s a mother talking about, you know, ‘Mr. President, I’m struggling,’ and it’s a vet, you know, who’s still trying to find his path after he’s no longer serving,” he explained. “People are really raw in their emotions in some of these letters, partly because they don’t expect the president to actually read it. It’s almost like a meditation for them — a way of getting stuff off their chest.”
